Okay, long time no update because I've been busy devoting my efforts into my LiveJournal account rather than here. I'm sorry, but yes. The tagboard here is as dead as a doornail.Anyway, just a quick note: the book, It's I'MPOSSIBLE, which I illustrated, will be launched next month. I'm really hoping there will be people going to support us ex-JJ students (author, co-author and the illustrator, yours truly). More details will be supplied before the event. The book's website can be found here: Only a few pieces of my work are posted there: but if you would be as kind as to mosey over and take a look, I'd be happy. (I'd be happier if you bought a copy, hint hint.) You can get a postcard from me FOC as well as pre-order the book by telling me. Or you can just follow the instructions on the website. It's that easy to get your hands on it, and it's dirt cheap when you pre-order. Oh, and they don't come with my autograph, you'll have to chase after me yourself *grins* And yes, I am back from visiting family in Malaysia. Bought plenty of barang-barang at low, low prices. For the full inventory, you can shift to the left, there's a link to my LJ page where you can view the dirties. I traveled light - I donated blood while over in Penang. Not gonna donate in Singapore any more, because they pay you for the blood donated in Penang, Yes, for one bulging bag of blood (that part is always nasty no matter where you go) you get RM60 (roughly S$30) worth of supermarket vouchers. Here, you get a brightly coloured elastic bandage. No brainer which one is more popular. Pros: Nice bed to lie down in, free television, if something goes wrong, the emergency unit is one speedy gurney ride away, vouchers of course, comprehensive blood check for hepatitis and other abnormalities with results in a few hours, professionals doing the blood drawing, free hot Milo. Cons: Stabbed with a needle three times (once to draw a vial for testing, once to put in the local anesthetic which incidentally does not work and the final time to suck out the blood), PAIN (the blood needle is the size of a bloody Vitagen straw - I'm not exaggerating), even though the nurses are pros, they managed to tug on my needle while it was still in me. Yowch, Anyway, both arms (one for testing, the other for drawing the bag) are awfully sore now and the usual restrictions apply. No running even though I feel FAT (and since when is that new?) and no heavy lifting, but that last one went out the window. Darn heavy luggage. Garrgh. You, kind reader, might be interested to know that I went to church yesterday. *sweatdrops* It's not what you think! Hema invited me to see her church production. Apparently in Singapore, 'church production' means the whole hog: service and show. In Malaysia, a show is a show. No religious stuff (apart from the show itself, naturally). So... it was awkward, so to say the least. There was singing and preaching and praying and lotsa stuff that made me squirm. There were so many people there, most of them my age, give or take a few years. And the service is all the way at Expo! The crowd trying to get in and out was frightening. So many people trying to get into church. Recently, I read this article about religion in Singapore. They did a poll: a HUGE proportion of teenagers say they are Christian but their family members aren't. Can you say cult-like? *censor alarm goes off* Quick disclaimer: I am in no way insulting or disrespecting Christianity, or religion in general. Some (okay, nearly all) of my closest friends are Christian. I am a firm believer in the Constitution which states that freedom of religion is guaranteed to all (freedom of speech is there too, incidentally.) Back to the discussion. The atmosphere in the church was frightening. People closing their eyes in estacy as they communed with the higher powers. For goodness' sake, there was even a healing session where people laid hands on each other and prayed. Now, belief is a powerful thing. The placebo effect does have miraculous properties which can make the blind see, the crippled walk and the scourge of cancer disappear. But can we afford to wait for a miracle? Let's take a hypothetical situation. Out of a thousand cancer patients who attend church regularly, one makes a full recovery. Is that a miracle? I, a creature of science, would think otherwise. In fact, I'd harvest her cells and search for cancer-fighting agents (just kidding). That's over. In other news, there was a massive book fair over at Expo. Hema and I flew in and browsed. For me, it was like a starved child being fed with sumptuous food. But you know me. In the end, despite the giant savings, I managed to blow $52. But I was - still am - deliriously happy because I found a new manga to read! For an old title, Sakura Taisen is great. By the way, anyone living here in the west side of Singapore who wants to go over to the east side for fun should have their heads examined. That place is so packed with people one can hardly walk. We tried to pay a visit to UniQlo but guess what? There's a queue to get in. A really, really long queue. Singaporeans are mad. Don't really mind this time, though. The clothes are really nice. Tampines is crazy! There are three shopping malls sprawled around the MRT station. Three. All of them were packed to bursting to people, even the old ones. Don't even think about getting into Tampines One. In the end, managed to find some lunch (at 5 something!) before bidding a happy farewell to Tampines. Today's news: went for an interview over at SMU (Social Science faculty, or SocSci). Madness. The whole time was spent talking about Law. I don't even want to think about it, nutsy. I am back.Mm, I realised I was supposed to post some lovely MAD camp outing pics when I got back from Malaysia. Goodness, I am a TERRIBLE procrastinator. So far, it's been 2 days since I got back and I'm only blogging now. Not even blogging to boot, just posting a few lame excuses. Shall be brief, then. These past few days, I've been catching up with the Muggers' Gang and other beloved JJ people. Yesterday, went out for lunch at Swensen's with Hema, Cherie, Glennda and Chin Khang. We had a great time, talking school politics until the staff got fed up with us. The real headache was splitting the bill and it took a heck of a time to sort it out. In the end, Cherie valiantly came to a sensible division of payment and we skedaddled before they could make our lives any more miserable (10% service charge! How my heart bleeds). Today I went to school to pick up my lab coat for the Science Focus program and ended up spending time with Desmy. Got my Tommy fix early this morning when I happened to meet him, Kang Sheng and my dear Love Fiesta senior (until now!)Germaine. After being denied a lab coat by the uncle there, I went back with Desmy to pick up 10 of the ruddy things. We subsequently went for lunch over at Bukit Timah, then the Jurong Regional Library so May Ching is a happy girl. Borrowed The Third Witch, a book I've been chasing for some time. Eh, that's it for the current update of my life. Labels: books, library, muggers' gang |
