Once, there was a boy named John. One day, his father, a confectioner, gave him a large bag of sweets he had just created that day. John was about to eat the entire bag immediately when his father stopped him and gave him a lecture about the value of sharing.

John took the lecture to heart and the next day, took the bag of sweets to school with him. He spent his breaktime walking around the classroom offering each of his classmates one, which they gratefully accepted.

He went home that day with the empty bag, glowing with happiness after being roundly praised by his teacher for being so generous. His parents also heaped praises on him after hearing what he had done.

This went on until John was transferred to a new school a month later when his parents moved. On his first day, he proudly brought a big bag of sweets to share with his new classmates.

During breaktime, John got up and began offering his new classmates the sweets. This time, however, every single one of them refused the sweets. Some said they were full, some didn't like the flavour of the sweets and some said that their parents had forbidden them from eating sweets. John went home that day terribly upset. He was so used to sharing his delicious sweets with others.

The next day, he proffered the bag of sweets to his neighbour again, who politely refused. This time, John grabbed the smaller boy by the collar and threatened to beat him if he refused to take the sweet. Terrified, John's neighbour took and ate one sweet. This continued until each child in the class had eaten one sweet each and John's bag was empty. He went home overjoyed that he had successfully shared his sweets, not caring about the unhappy faces of his classmates.

A week passed, until Michael, John's classmate could take it no more. When John made his rounds of the class with his sweet bag, Michael firmly refused it.

"You can't force me to take a sweet against my will," said Michael.

John immediately fell upon Michael and started beating him up. The two boys were still fighting when the teacher walked in. Who do you think the teacher sided with? John, who wanted only to share the delicious sweets his father made? Or Michael, who was beat up by John for refusing to take a sweet?
